About the Department

The society of Iran and Hamedan province is currently in a transitional condition and like most other societies is facing many societal opportunities, threats and challenges. It is safe to say that nowadays governing Iranian society requires knowledge and scientific insight in the field of Sociology more than ever. Development of urbanism, expansion of modern media, globalization, composition and reformation of the population, presence and participation of women in the society, changes of rural life style, youth subculture, etc. has made the necessity for attending to and training skilled experts in the field of Society very clear. Thus, the Department of Social Sciences of Bu-Ali Sina University was formed with the purpose of training skilled workforce in the field of societal and cultural studies.

A review of the history of the Department shows that this field was present at the time of the establishment of the University in 1974 and start of admission of students in 1975 in the form of 3 centers before the Islamic Revolution, but as a service provider group in Bu-Ali Sina University and not as an independent department. This Department followed a general conception of social sciences and included members from the departments of Economics, Educational Sciences and Social Sciences. Later this department was dissolved into departments of Social Sciences, Economics and Sociology. After the Revolution and as a result of the movements of Cultural Revolution, the activity of this department was temporarily recessed and the department restarted its activity later on. Consequently, its official establishment as an independent department was in 1989. Although before the revolution professors such as Navidi, Viski, and Mohseni were instructors of the department, among the first professors of the new independent department Dr. Mohammadjavad Eghbalian, Dr. Florans Pouyande, Dr. Kamran, and Dr. Sae'i can be named. First groups of student of this field were admitted as teachers of social sciences. Later, due to decrease in allocations of teaching fields, this field was changed to Social Research.

Currently the Department of Social Sciences is one of the departments of Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and has 157 B.A students, 50 M.A students and 5 PhD. students. Recently M.A course in Demography was approved and is to admit students. Scientific-research periodical of Contemporary Research in Sociology is published in Bu-Ali Sina University by the professors of this department. As of 2016, the faculty members of this department include 6 associate professors, 2 assistant professors and 1 trainer (PhD. student) and a number of visiting professors.
